To You

Deep down I always knew
it was never meant to be.
The piercing pains of past
would never set us free.
The innocence of youth
slipped past us in the night,
and we awoke naked
and embarrassed in the light.

We tried the best we could
to open up our hearts,
with morning laughter's merriments
to evening's blissful arts.
But autumn faded quickly,
too soon it turned to cold,
and talk of tangled torments
to tricky to unfold.

The things I never did--
fear fiercely tied my hands.
The things I never said--
shame stiffly took a stand.
Good memories do flow
and always will prevail.
Our giddy giggles echo
on this long and lonely trail.
